Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 against the Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half during an accidental collision with team-mate Spencer Jones.

His teammate stepped on the footwear of the big man, who instantly fell to the court clutching his knee.

The star, who leads the league season in boards and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight assists in the matchup prior to sustaining the setback.

He is scheduled for an MRI scan on Tuesday to assess the seriousness of the injury.

"Immediately, he realized he was hurt," stated Denver head coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever that is injured, that's tough to see, most notably a player as talented as Jokic. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Of course, right now, I'm more worried about him as a person and the disappointment of facing something of that nature."
