The Mayor-Elect affirms his intention to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point in his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a space for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
