NY Introduces Online Platform for Residents to Share ICE Images After Detentions of 4 US Citizens

The state attorney general has launched a fresh online portal urging residents to submit visual evidence of immigration raids across New York. This step follows a day after a significant ICE raid rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.

American Citizens Detained In ICE Operation

A US congressman revealed during a news conference that four citizens were detained and held for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations broke out in New York on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," the attorney general declared in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and documented immigration enforcement during the raid, I encourage you to provide that evidence with the authorities. We are committed to reviewing these reports and evaluating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The platform includes options to send images and video footage of the operation, plus a field to specify geographic details. When submitting, users must check a option that states that "authorities might employ any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or public report."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say featured more than 50 ICE personnel, took place in a well-known district of the city where fake purses, items, goods and additional items are regularly available in large quantities – frequently to sightseers.

Videos of the incident show several covered and weaponized federal agents securing and holding a person, and forcing aside onlookers. Crowds of locals followed the officers down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was observed rolling through the city streets.

Political Response

During a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be arrested for without cause." He clarified the persons were released on the following day with no accusations made.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman said. "This is a military-style operation to incite tension. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for the government to deploy the military to halt unrest that they themselves caused."

Extensive Outcry

Fury over the federal action escalated – each of the mayoral candidates denounced the operation, along with the state leader.

"Once again, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.

NYC community groups voiced concern also.

"Federal officers targeted Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, hooded officers and tactical gear to focus on street vendors working to survive. This action had no relation to public safety and everything to do with intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

Agency rules forbids the holding of citizens and the agency has claimed it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has discovered that numerous US citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the start of the existing leadership.

Ongoing Trend

Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in New York and nationwide lately.

A mid-October raid in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous as are accusations of aggression and abusive practices.

Recently, a letter submitted by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
