Forecasters are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be chilly, so warm wraps vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Warnings Activated

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this indicated the weather was likely to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
