Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
