Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an late session of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The official explained the morning session ended without tangible results, amid differences over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the talks are "difficult and have still not achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A lasting truce
  • The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Post-war administration of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place feels like home any longer and until all the hostages come back no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

Near the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Protester one woman remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis want the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"We are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis said another two victims had been transported. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers stated.
