Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
