British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
