Wealthy businessman Jared Isaacman has been confirmed as the incoming leader of NASA, capping an atypical nomination process where Trump put his name forward, withdrew it, and then submitted his name once more.

The billionaire, an amateur jet pilot who was the first civilian to perform a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in a generation to come directly from the private sector.

For a significant portion of the space community, the success of his tenure will be decided by one crucial test: its ability to land people to the Moon ahead of the Chinese space program.

The President has stated explicitly a goal for the America to establish a permanent lunar base, both to enable harvesting materials and to function as a staging point for journeys to the Red Planet.

Senate Vote and Political Dynamics

On Wednesday, the Senate cleared his appointment with a decisive vote.

The President originally rescinded Isaacman's nomination in the spring, citing a "deep dive of prior associations".

At the time, the president was openly clashing with the SpaceX CEO, one of his biggest supporters, with whom Isaacman has professional ties.

The new administrator indicates he is now fully behind the presidential objective to extract lunar resources, creating a divergence from Elon Musk, who has argued that lunar missions is a distraction from the journey to Martian exploration.

Strategic Plan

In the current global space race, world powers are competing to utilize the moon's resources.

“Now is not the time for inaction but a time for action because if we lose ground, if we err, we may not recover, and the implications could shift the balance of power here on Earth,” Isaacman told US Senators earlier this month.

The business leader sees introducing more private sector competition as key to accomplishing those goals, according to a circulated document laying out his vision for the agency.

In his Senate hearing, he reaffirmed the plan, which he crafted when he was first nominated, but noted it was a developing document.

His welcoming of rivalry could also create a conflict with Musk. Last week, Isaacman praised the award of a significant agreement to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the main challengers of SpaceX.

In the leaked plan, he suggested the agency should increasingly partner with universities and academic institutions, envisioning the agency as a "force multiplier for scientific discovery".

He pointed to the upcoming deployment of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"And if we be close to something groundbreaking - like launching Roman - I will consider all avenues to make it happen, even providing personal financing if that's what it requires to produce the scientific results," he wrote.

Personal Fortune

According to estimates, his wealth is valued at around 1.2 billion dollars, accumulated through his payment processing company and the sale of his business that trained pilots and operated a private fleet of military jets.

The position of agency chief will be his maiden role in politics, a contrast to the last two people appointed as NASA chief.

He will succeed the former transportation secretary, who has been the acting administrator since July.
