Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
