Alleged Bondi Attackers Operated Alone and Did Not Undergo Training in the Southeast Asian Nation, Authorities Say.

The two alleged attackers responsible for the lethal shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, are believed to have operated independently, as stated by Australian authorities.

Authorities also confirmed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram flew to the Philippines on 1 November. Their travel plans involved landing in the capital Manila before traveling onward that same day to Davao City. The pair returned to Sydney on 29 November.

No Evidence of Training During Trip

Investigators indicate the duo did not receive any form of terrorist training or "planning" during their stay in the Philippines. Preliminary inquiries from local officials suggest they "hardly ventured out of" their hotel.

The attack—labeled as Australia's deadliest mass shooting since 1996—has been officially declared a terrorist incident.

"Our teams are currently examining the footage," she stated, explaining that early assessments suggest that "these individuals are believed to have been lone actors."

National law enforcement Chief Krissy Barrett informed reporters on Tuesday that surveillance material tracking the alleged gunmen's movements in the Philippines had been handed over to domestic authorities.

"There is no evidence to suggest these suspects were affiliated with a larger terrorist cell, or were acting on orders from overseas entities to execute an act of violence," the police chief stated.

But, the pair were also not necessarily in the Philippines as tourists, Commissioner Barrett added. She stressed that, given that the probe is continuing, new evidence could surface.

Inspiration and Court Proceedings

In prior statements, Australian leader Anthony Albanese said it appears both accused attackers were "motivated by ISIS" ideology.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was fatally shot by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying long-barrelled guns—are accused of having targeted guests at the Jewish festival celebration.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the shooting, has been charged with 59 crimes. These comprise 15 charges of murder and one count of perpetrating a terrorist act. He is due to appear in court in April.

Travel Particulars

In the aftermath following the shooting, immigration authorities in the Philippines reported that the older suspect had arrived in the country using an foreign passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The pair had stated the metropolis of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their pre-arranged journey back to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a expansive metropolis on the east of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary southern island. It is noted that, Islamist militants have been known to be active in less developed parts of central and south-western Mindanao.
